Episode 02: Māori wisdom about periods you didn't know you needed | Michele Wilson
Periods, perimenopause and period leave - we talk about it all!
Michele Wilson (Tainui, Ngāti Paoa) is the founder and CEO of AWWA Period Care, a female-founded indigenous-owned business providing reusable period underwear.
While the business was born out of traditional Māori wisdom and practices surrounding ikura (periods), Michele did not grow up having an understanding of these. In this kōrero with Petra, Michele talks about her journey to embrace and reclaim her Māori identity, and how this haerenga has given her a fresh perspective on her body and the actions she can take to awhi (support) herself, as well as a passion to advocate for wider-spread awareness on women's menstrual cycles.
We also hear what she's teaching her own daughters about their periods, the pretty revolutionary flexibility given to the AWWA team around work and their ikura, and of course, we chat perimenopause and menopause.
P.S. The lovely team at AWWA have a special discount code just for you, our Grey Areas community. Use the code GREYAREAS15 for 15% off all AWWA underwear and bras. (Includes AWWA Teens and multipacks. Excludes accessories.) This offer is available until 11.59pm, 30 June.
